106.3 WORD Cover Story

Yucca Mountain

August 16, 2018 - 6:00 am

In this week's edition of the 106.3 WORD Cover Story, we take a look into Yucca Mountain and how South Carolina could possibly offload it's large amounts of nuclear waste there.

Yucca Mountain houses nuclear waste repository designated by the Nuclear Waste Policy Act amendments of 1987. It was supposed to be a deep geological repository storage facility for spent nuclear fuel and other high-level radioactive waste in the United States. The site is located on federal land adjacent to the Nevada Test Site in Nye County, Nevada.

The project was approved in 2002 by the 107th United States Congress, but federal funding for the site ended in 2011 under the Obama Administration via amendment to the Department of Defense and Full-Year Continuing Appropriations Act, passed on April 14, 2011.

Recently, Congressman Jeff Duncan visited the site to get a better look at what can be done there.

Lee Rogers sat down with Duncan to discuss the trip and get his thoughts on the site.

Congressman Duncan posted updates on his Facebook page from his trip.
