South Carolina's teacher of the year is a science teacher from Fairfield County.

Chanda Jefferson won the award at a banquet Wednesday evening and then came to the Statehouse Thursday morning to be honored.

The University of South Carolina graduate is in her eighth year of teaching and says she looks forward to celebrating teachers across the state and encouraging them to use their voices to talk and celebrate what is going on inside the classrooms.

After honoring Jefferson, State Superintendent Molly Spearman answered criticism of her from a May 1 rally where she said teachers were walking out on their obligations.

Spearman didn't back down from her comment, but says she understands the passion of teachers and wants to keep working with them to make the education system better.
