Education is key when it comes to talking to the public about safe digging and this year is no different.  Greer CPW invites the public to a free educational day on Friday August 10th, 2018 from 10 AM – 2 PM to learn about the importance of calling 8-1-1 before you dig.  8-1-1 is the universal phone number to have underground utility lines marked before starting a digging project.

“A common misconception is 8-1-1 is just for contractors or large companies.  Having underground utility lines marked is also a requirement for homeowners when planting trees, installing fences or mailboxes.  It’s a free service that can save customers a lot of headache down the road,” said Rob Rhodes, Greer CPW Gas Department Manager.

The free event will be held at Greer CPW’s Customer Service Complex at 301 McCall Street in Greer and will include gift card giveaways to Lowe’s and Home Depot, a free bounce house and sno-cones.

What: Call Before You Dig Day

When: Friday August 10th, 2018

Where: Greer CPW - 301 McCall Street Greer, SC 29650

Time: 10 AM – 2 PM

Chris Wilson, a locator for Greer CPW, weighs in on calling before you dig.

Alison Rauch, the Public Information Coordinator for Greer CPW, says that in 2018, 59 gas service lines have been hit as well as three gas main lines; and that 30 of the lines that have been hit were due to contractors not calling before they start a project. According to the CPW gas department, irrigation or in ground pool contractors have been the main culprits.
