BLUFFTON, S.C. (AP) — What appear to be human remains have been found when workers uprooted a tree near the South Carolina coast.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head reported workers were removing a tree at the Waddell Mariculture Center in Bluffton on Wednesday when the remains were found.

Center director Al Stokes says he talked with an area archaeologist and pathologist and was told they appeared to be very old human bones. There is no evidence the bones were involved in a recent death.

A Beaufort County sheriff's report said based on the location and condition of the remains, they may be part of an old burial site.

Coroner Ed Allen is examining the bones.

The Waddell Mariculture Center is a field experiment station for the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources.
