FAMILY KILLED-FLORIDA

OCALA, Fla. _ A man suspected of killing his wife and four children and driving their bodies into Georgia has returned to Florida to face murder charges, authorities said. The Ocala Star-Banner reports Michael W. Jones Jr., 38, is charged so far with the death of Casei Jones. Her body was found in his van following a crash in Hickox, Georgia last week. Joe Biden is flexing his front-runner muscle with new endorsements from three congressmen, including two former chairmen of the Congressional Black Caucus and a former Florida governor. OBIT-CLYBURN WIFE

COLUMBIA, S.C. _ Emily Clyburn, the wife of House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn of South Carolina who helped raise millions of dollars to help students attend the alma mater they shared, died in Columbia on Thursday morning, according to the congressman's office. She was 80 years old. Rep. Clyburn skipped several recent public events, at which officials sought prayers for his family and Emily Clyburn in his absence. Most recently, former State Sen. COAL MINE SHUTDOWNS

GILLETTE, Wyo. _ Another buyer has entered a potential bankruptcy deal that could allow two idle Wyoming mines to reopen but would in effect pay the coal company to do so. Bristol, Tennessee-based Contura Energy said Wednesday it reached a tentative deal to pay Jasper, Alabama-based FM Coal $90 million to take the Eagle Butte and Belle Ayr mines. Contura also would pay Campbell County $13.5 million for unpaid local taxes. SENT: 429 words.

BATON ROUGE, La. _ The three major candidates for Louisiana governor are facing off Thursday night in their first debate, only a week from the start of early voting in the Oct. 12 election. HOUSTON _ The remnants of Tropical Depression Imelda unleashed torrential rain Thursday in parts of Texas, prompting hundreds of water rescues, a hospital evacuation and road closures as the powerful storm system drew comparisons to Hurricane Harvey two years ago. Although the amount of predicted rainfall is massive — forecasters say some places could see 40 inches (100 centimeters) or more this week — Imelda's deluge is largely targeting areas east of Houston, including the small town of Winnie and the city of Beaumont.
