PICKENS, S.C. (AP) — A former South Carolina police officer who is suing the city of Pickens over his termination has now been charged with sexual exploitation and solicitation of a minor.

The Greenville News reports 28-year-old former Pickens police Officer Akiel Jamar McKnight was arrested Thursday. McKnight is accused of attempting to coerce a minor into sexual activity in 2017 and 2018 and asking that minor for sexually explicit photos and videos.

The department fired McKnight in May 2018 over a policy violation not involving misconduct. McKnight sued the city and department in November, alleging he was fired because of his race and sexual orientation. McKnight has since worked at and been fired from three other police departments.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating. It's unclear if McKnight has a lawyer.
