Feds seek $70K from Georgia sheriff for muscle car purchase

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (AP) — The U.S. Department of Justice is seeking $70,000 from a Georgia sheriff who spent the money on a muscle car.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Thursday that the agency said this month it wants to be reimbursed for Gwinnett County Sheriff Butch Conway's purchase of a Dodge Charger Hellcat.

The purchase was approved by the federal government, which now questions if it's being used as promised. The purchase application said it would be used to educate drivers about illegal street racing dangers. Conway says it's used for his commute as well as in field operations.

Sheriff's spokeswoman Deputy Shannon Volkodav says Conway stands behind the purchase, calling it appropriate for an agency with a $92 million budget. County officials say they'll repay the federal government, which set a July 31 deadline.
