Lawyer for suspended sheriff: Indictments aren't specific

LAURENS, S.C. (AP) — A lawyer for a suspended sheriff in South Carolina wants several indictments against him thrown out because they aren't specific.

An attorney for suspended Greenville County Sheriff Will Lewis said Monday the lack of names or details hampers Lewis' defense. He says there are thousands of pages of records and dozens of witnesses.

Lawyer Rauch Wise said in court Lewis ought to know which sheriff's office employees accuse him of threats instead of having to prepare for any of them showing up at trial.

Prosecutor Leslie Robinson says the indictments include needed details and allow prosecutors to pursue the cases the way the evidence leads.

Lewis faces charges of perjury, obstruction of justice and misconduct in office. Authorities say he also misused public money to pursue an affair.
