MOULTRIE, Ga. (AP) — Authorities have charged a man with killing his former girlfriend nearly three years after she went missing in rural south Georgia.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said Thursday that 49-year-old Michael Heads was charged with murder after recent DNA tests linked human remains discovered in 2017 to Shada Esther of Moultrie. She had been missing since August 2016

A GBI news release said Heads was Esther's live-in boyfriend when she vanished in Georgia. He was arrested Tuesday in Slidell, Louisiana, where he had moved after her disappearance. Heads now faces extradition from Louisiana to Georgia. It was not immediately known if Heads had an attorney.

The remains that DNA analysis confirmed to be Esther's were found in Banks County, more than 240 miles (386 kilometers) from her home.

This story has been corrected to show the slain woman's first name is Shada, not Shanda.
