Meaning of 'clean coal' mentioned by Trump unclear

SOMERSET, Pa. (AP) — President Donald Trump invoked "clean coal" at his rally in Phoenix, repeating a phrase that's often used by coal industry supporters to put a positive spin on the heavily polluting fuel.

But the term used Tuesday night remains ambiguous in its definition. It's become most closely associated with coal-burning power plants that can capture and remove greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming. However, only a handful of coal plants worldwide have the technology.

The Republican president took credit for the opening of a mine in Pennsylvania that will produce coal used to make steel.

The chief executive of the mine's owner says the company recently decided to reopen it because a steel industry boom has driven up prices for metallurgical coal.
