No more overdue fees for one South Carolina library

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A South Carolina library says it will stop charging fines for overdue materials, in a move officials hope will expand access to library resources for all.

News outlets report that the library announced the change Wednesday.

The library also said anyone who owes fees will not have to pay them.

The State says the change will waive the fines of more than 70,000 library users, and allow 20,000 additional users whose accounts were blocked to rent materials again.

There is one exception: The library does say that those who lose library materials will still have to pay a replacement fee.

In addition, the library is still urging patrons to return their materials on time.
