ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) — A police chief in North Carolina has fired a second one of her captains in just three months.

Asheville Police Chief Tammy Hooper said she fired Capt. Mark Byrd on Friday because he lied and tried to undermine her and other police leaders.

The Citizen-Times of Asheville reports that Hooper said Byrd was dishonest about the timeline into the investigation into a police beating of a pedestrian in August.

Byrd's lawyer wrote back that he will fight the firing because it was intimidation and harassment and Hooper leads a police department with severe management issues.

Hooper fired Capt. Stony Gonce in May saying he tried to intimidate a lieutenant investigation the beating.

Byrd and Gonce were two of three captains the Asheville Police Department had a year ago.
