October 15, 2018 - 10:49 am

Greenville City Police and the Greenville County Coroner's Office on the scene of a grim discovery in downtown Greenville's popular Falls Park.

A body has been recovered from the Reedy River near the Governor's School for the Arts at the west end of the park. It was spotted shortly after 8:30 Monday morning.

Lt. Jason Rampey with Greenville Police said two homeless men had been drinking alcohol in the park Sunday afternoon.  One of the men left to sleep at a homeless shelter.  The other man stayed behind to sleep in the park.

When the man returned Monday morning to find his friend, he found him face down in the water, deceased.  A backpack was found on a ledge about 10 to 12 feet above where the body was found.  Rampey said it appears the victim was sitting or standing on the ledge, slipped and fell into the water below.

The deceased is identified as 58 year old David Richard Davis of Greenville. The cause of death is not yet known.
