If you’re looking at factors that contributed to Clemson bringing home the national championship last season, you might first want to take a look at just how much money the school spends on recruiting.

Most top tier college athletics programs spend more than $1 million a year on recruiting. About 30 of the top collegiate programs spends at least $1 million per year on recruiting for men’s sports alone.

As for Clemson, they’re pushing that to new extremes, having spent $2.9 million on recruiting last year.

To put that in perspective, just a decade earlier Clemson was spending only about $300,000 on recruiting per year.

Much of the cost is sunk into airfare to jet coaches across the country.

That right there sheds light on just how much recruiting has changed over the years – what once was a more regional scouring for talent has become truly national, and likely we’ll be seeing more schools ramp up their spending to match Clemson in the coming years.
