Coroner Called To Lake Hartwell

Person may have jumped from railroad tracks

A body was discovered early Monday morning in the Seneca River (Lake Hartwell) near Clemson at the Oconee – Pickens County line.  The body was on the Oconee County side of the lake. 

It is presumed the decedent jumped from the Norfolk Southern trestle that crosses the river. 

The Oconee County Sheriff’s Department, Oconee County Coroner Office, with assistance from Clemson Police and Clemson University Police investigated this incident. 

The deceased was a 22 year-old male international graduate student at Clemson University.  He was from India; he resided in an apartment in Clemson in proximity of the Norfolk Southern Railway and Lake Hartwell. 

An uncle has been notified of the death; he is attempting to notify the parent’s and other family. 

A post mortem exam was performed Monday to assist with the death investigation; the decedent died due to drowning; he had no physical injuries to have caused his death. 

Based on evidence obtained by the Oconee County Sheriff’s Department with assistance from the  Clemson University Police Department and Clemson University, the manner of death is classified a suicide.
