More Americans are using credit cards than ever before.  But how much debt are they carrying?  

While the average percentage of Americans carrying credit card debt has been on the decline over the past ten years, the average credit card debt amount has been increasing. That’s according to ValuePenguin, which recently used US Census Bureau and Federal Reserve figures for a closer look. 

Over 40% U.S. households are carrying credit card debt.  In South Carolina, it’s $5,800 which is actually one of the lowest.  The highest is Alaska with households showing an average of over $13,000 of credit card debt.

Top 5 states with the least credit card debt:

  1. Ohio - $5,446
  2. South Carolina - $5,801
  3. Maine - $5,803
  4. Pennsylvania - $6,065
  5. Michigan - $6,082

 

Top 5 states with the most credit card debt:

  1. Alaska - $13,048
  2. Wyoming - $11,546
  3. Utah - $11,222
  4. California - $10,496
  5. Montana - $9,759
