Press release from Spartanburg County:

A Mayo man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after he admitted to multiple drug, traffic and weapons charges.

Wade Scruggs, 41, pleaded guilty Thursday to 11 charges that included trafficking methamphetamine, possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, possession of heroin with intent to distribute, possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime and 2 counts of possession of a firearm by a person convicted of a violent felony.

Circuit Judge Keith Kelly issued the sentence.

On March 23, 2019, Scruggs was caught in possession of 2 guns during an apparent break-in at a storage facility on Parris Bridge Road. Scruggs was previously convicted of a violent crime and he was not allowed to be in possession of a weapon.

On April 25, 2019, sheriff’s deputies spotted Scruggs driving erratically on Old Furnace Road. Deputies initiated a traffic stop and Scruggs refused to follow the direction.

A pursuit ensued and deputies chased Scruggs, the sole passenger in his car, on 15 different roads.

Scruggs was seen throwing baggies from his vehicle before he wrecked on Mayo Road. The contents of the discarded baggies included 199.35 grams of methamphetamine, 7.31 grams of cocaine and 1.37 grams of heroin. Deputies recovered a Ruger handgun from the driver’s side of the car and a .22 caliber rifle from the trunk.

Assistant Solicitor Jesse Williams prosecuted Scruggs.

Scruggs’ prior criminal record includes convictions for second-degree burglary, receiving stolen goods, obtaining property by false pretenses, grand larceny and violation of probation.
