The keystone of Greenville’s new downtown plan is a proposed “Innovation District,” which is designed to be a home for tech startups, small businesses and higher education outposts.

While stated goal of the district may be to expand Greenville’s role as an “innovator” – whether that innovation comes in the form of economic development, the local tech industry, or local higher education – the more practical goal of the district is less complicated.

Simply put, they want more people living downtown.

Such a district would create a funnel for continuous tenants in the area. From there, all else flows: more restaurants, larger two-lane streets, protected bike lanes throughout downtown, and an expanded network of walking trails.

Most of the proposals, such as an idea for creating a new dog park and an entertainment district, as well as the aforementioned innovation district, are still just that: proposals.
