Authorities say a small fire inside a drum of waste at a South Carolina factory that makes nuclear fuel was put out without any injuries or danger to the public.

A report from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission said workers at the Westinghouse Nuclear Fuel plant near Columbia heard a noise around 2 a.m. Friday and noticed the lid had blown off a sealed drum.

The report says paper inside the drum was smoldering. The drum was also filled with mop heads, rags and laboratory waste.

The report says the fire was put out without an extinguisher. Workers checked other drums for heat and temporarily suspended packaging this type of waste.

Federal officials will inspect the facility later this month to learn more about the incident.
