Darrian Skylar Smith was a firefighter with the Fair Play Fire Department, having worked to put out fires in the Upstate since September.

But now Smith is charged with being on the opposite side of things, as he now faces jail time for arson.

Smith is accused of setting fire to an abandoned mobile home on Shore Drive in Fair Play around 11 pm on Friday. That’s according to Oconee County Fire Chief Charlie King.

The home that was set on fire was completely destroyed.

Then on Sunday, around noon, firefighters went back to the same neighborhood to put out flames at an empty home on Shore Drive near Herring Road.

Six fire stations, including firefighters from Anderson and Oconee Counties, worked for more than a half hour to put out the flames, which were especially threatening given the ignited homes proximity to some nearby woods.

Smith was reportedly caught because of astute neighbors who recognized him being near the home just ten minutes before the flames erupted.

Unsurprisingly, he is no longer employed with the fire department.

He was arrested Monday and remains in the Oconee County Detention Center as of Tuesday.

Charlie King, the fire chief, said Smith’s alleged crimes do not reflect the core values of the fire department….

Now that’s an understatement.
