The Greenville Health System has withdrawn its application to build a new psychiatric hospital in Greenville but is looking at other solutions to fill the needs of the community.

GHS proposed the hospital in 2016 and last May applied for a certificate of need. But the application was denied in December by the state Department of Health and Environmental Control.

Dr. Karen Lommel, chief medical officer for behavioral health, said “While we withdrew this application, we are by no means giving up on this important issue. Our patients, our community and our team members who deliver outstanding care deserve a modern mental health facility with expanded services.”

Lommel said GHS is formulating a new plan that it hopes DHEC will approve.
