The Third Annual Great Oconee Cleanup is scheduled to happen this Saturday starting at 8:30am.  The event objective is to remove litter from the roadways in Oconee County.

The roadways that volunteers will focus on this year are from the area of Wells highway from highway 123 (Sandifer Blvd) to the other end of Wells highway at highway 123 (Clemson Blvd). The litter pickup area will also include Davis Mill road, two miles of Shiloh road (one mile on each side of Wells highway), and one mile of South Walnut street.  It's being planned using a partnership of the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office, the Oconee Economic Alliance, the Keep Oconee Beautiful Association, the School District of Oconee County and Oconee County Solid Waste.

Anyone interested is asked to preregister at EventBrite.com.  The first 150 registrants will get a free t-shirt.

Anyone is being asked to help, even if you don't preregister.  Just meet at Seneca High School at 8:30am Saturday morning. There is plenty of parking in the high school parking lot.  Activity buses (courtesy of the School District of Oconee County) will provide transportation to the litter pickup areas along Wells highway. A law enforcement officer will be on each bus to provide safety information before the actual pickup work begins in order to warn volunteers on litter that could be dangerous to handle, such as hypodermic needles and illegal drugs. The buses will also bring those who volunteer back to the parking lot of Seneca High School after the event is over.  Deputies from the Sheriff’s Office as well as troopers from the South Carolina Highway Patrol will be assisting with traffic control and safety. The organizers are working with the South Carolina Department of Transportation to have signs out to help with directions and safety for all those involved.

Anyone participating in the litter pickup will be provided safety vests, gloves, bags, water, and litter grabbers. Anyone under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a registered adult.
