A Greenville man was looking to join ISIS. Now he’s behind bars.

Agents with the FBI and the ATF made a visit to the home of 51-year-old Michael Bruse Messer Jr back in April of last year.

During their visit, they recovered a .38 caliber pistol – illegal, given Messer’s prior convictions, which included grand larceny and burglary.

About a month later, upon returning to the residence with a search warrant, they found another illegal pistol and ammunition, along with assorted items related to the Islamic State.

Following an investigation, agents found that Messer had posted in an online forum seeking out ways to join the fight alongside ISIS, and he even volunteered to be a suicide bomber.

Now this week Messer has been sentenced after he pleaded guilty to a gun charge. He’ll spend the next ten years in prison, without the possibility of parole.
