South Carolina House Speaker Jay Lucas says he doesn't want to stand on the education reforms the House passed this year.

Lucas said Tuesday he wants to pass legislation in 2020 to expand pre-kindergarten programs, improve high school graduation rates and possibly require two years of computer coding in high school instead of two years of foreign language.

House Education Committee Chairwoman Rita Allison says she and Lucas will hold several round table discussions around the state with the teachers of the year in each of South Carolina's 82 school districts. Allison says she wants those teachers to speak freely about problems.

The House passed a comprehensive education overhaul bill in March, but the Senate is taking it up in parts and paring it down before debating it in January.
