Today (Monday, August 13) is the last day that you’ll be able to walk across the Liberty Bridge in Falls Park for a while.  The bridge is going to close for maintenance.

All 10,000 square feet of bridge surfaces will be pressure washed, sanded and painted with three coats of specialized epoxy paint.  And although some of the work has been done without disrupting pedestrian traffic, there’s no way to paint the bridge surface without closing it down.  The city says it will be closed from Tuesday, August 14th until Friday, August 31st.

Besides painting the bridge surface, other maintenance being done to the bridge includes:

  • Reviewing and cleaning the 37 cables and 74 sockets.
  • Cleaning and inspecting the 36 main cable clamps, 6 ring cables and ring cable spelter sockets and 32 ring cable connectors.
  • Inspecting all the bolts and all 700 feet of hand railing to make sure everything is in proper working order.
  • Scouring, inspecting and painting the bridge's two 90-foot tall, 28-ton masts – both of which are anchored 70 feet in bedrock.

This is the first time since its construction that major work will be done on the City’s iconic structure.  Total cost for the repairs and maintenance will be just under $400,000.

Updates on the repairs and maintenance of the Liberty Bridge can be found on the City's website.
