It sounds like a cheesy opening line on your local nightly news, but here goes nothing: ahem.

When you go to your local library, you expect to see books, computers and – drag queens?

That’s actually what’s happening at the Five Forks Branch of the Greenville Public Library, where a controversial “Drag Queen Story Hour” is facing a petition to get it canceled.

The event is not technically a library sponsored event. It’s being hosted by a group called “Mom’s Liberal Happy Hour South Carolina.”

But even still, the Greenville County Library System is not budging.

In a statement, the library said the event meets with the “Meeting Spaces Use Policy and Regulations,” and that all library meeting spaces are available on an equitable basis, regardless of affiliations or beliefs of the group requesting their use.

Controversial nationwide, Drag Queen Story Hour Events have been held in several cities across the country.
