A local college that hasn’t played a football game since 1951 will return to the gridiron in a couple of years.

Erskine College on Thursday announced A. Shapleigh ‘Shap’ Boyd will be the Flying Fleet’s first football coach since 1951.  The school started its football program in 1915 and then ended it in 1951.

The new program is set to take the field in 2020.  The coaches will recruit student-athletes to enroll in the fall of 2019 for a redshirt season. During that time, student-athletes will prepare to play at the college level and allow the coaching staff to implement a system for the inaugural 2020 season.

The Flying Fleet’s new leader “Shap “Boyd was the Defensive Coordinator and Safeties Coach at the University of Virginia at Wise for the last three seasons.
