Man Pleads Guilty To Bank Robbery

59 year old Melvin Curtis Cheek of Spartanburg pled guilty to bank robbery and was sentenced to 18 years in prison.The bank robbery occurred on October 20, 2017 at the Arthur State Bank located on Warren H. Abernathy Hwy in Spartanburg.

Cheek wore sunglasses, a hat and brown gloves as he entered the bank. He approached a teller and handed her a note that stated he had a gun and demanded money.

Cheek left the bank with a sum of money and drove away in his truck which was observed by a witness.  A search warrant executed at his home revealed clothing that matched surveillance video from the bank. 

Cheek turned himself in three days later to the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office after confessing over the phone to the lead investigator.  He returned a small portion of the money he stole.  

Cheek will serve 85 percent of the 18 year prison sentence before he is eligible for release. He had a previous Armed Robbery Conviction.
