Governor Henry McMaster wants to know if he has the authority to remove the Ware Shoals mayor from office following his guilty plea to a domestic violence charge.

McMaster sent a formal request to Attorney General Alan Wilson wanting to know if he has the power to remove the mayor of Ware Shoals, John Kay Hanson, after being convicted of a crime the Governor labels “a crime involving moral turpitude” which violates the South Carolina Constitution.

On June 7, Hansen pleaded guilty to third-degree domestic violence, and Circuit Judge Frank Addy Jr. sentenced him to a year of probation and to attend an anger management class. Addy also signed a restraining order on him for his ex-wife.

McMaster's letter states Hansen has been unwilling to voluntarily resign from office since pleading guilty.
