(Greenville, SC)--On Friday, June 1, 2018, The Salvation Army will celebrate the 80th National Donut Day at The Donut Experiment at 2123 Augusta Street. In addition to donating 10% of sales to The Salvation Army for its social ministry programs, The Donut Experiment will be giving away a free cinnamon sugar donut with a purchase.

The Salvation Army began National Donut Day in honor of the “Doughnut Lassies”of WW1. In 1917, approximately 250 Salvation Army volunteers went overseas to aid American soldiers in France. These female volunteers began serving donuts to the soldiers, and they are credited with popularizing the donut in America when the soldiers returned home after the war. In 1938, The Salvation Army established Donut Day to commemorate the “Doughnut Lassies”and to bring awareness to The Salvation Army’s social service programs.

Today, The Salvation Army is celebrating its 80th National Donut Day, which occurs annually on the first Friday of June. The donut is a symbol of The Salvation Army’s commitment to do the most good by providing comfort through social programs, ministries and services. The Salvation Army partners nationally with Krispy Kreme on Donut Day, and the Greenville Salvation Army is partnering locally with The Donut Experiment, as well. The Salvation Army will have Counter Kettles out for additional donations, and Captain Kettle, The Salvation Army’s mascot, will also make an appearance at The Donut Experiment from 2:30-3:30 p.m. for photos with young and young-at-heart visitors.

“The Salvation Army is happy to bring awareness to our history and social ministries through National Donut Day,” says Major Pete Costas, Area Commander. “Our partnership with The Donut Experiment will bring in donations that help those in need in our community, and we are thankful for those who give back on National Donut Day."

Stop by The Donut Experiment to get a sweet treat and give to a great cause. Donations can also be made to The Salvation Army here or by texting"doughnutday" to 41444. Donut lovers are encouraged to snap a picture of themselves while eating their donut along with the hashtag #GivingIsSweet.
