The Greenville County Multi-Jurisdictional Drug Enforcement Unit (DEU) alongside SLED intercepted a shipment of marijuana being sent from California to Greenville and arrested the two individuals that received the deliveries.

“Marijuana and marijuana derivatives are readily encountered by law enforcement in Greenville,” said DEU Commander Bart McEntire. “The ‘decriminalization’ of marijuana in the western portions of the U.S. has opened pipelines of illegal distribution into the Greenville area.”

In a press release, the DEU said their investigation began after they and SLED first learned of the potential shipment, and two locations in Greenville were then placed under surveillance.

A shipment of twelve pounds of marijuana was seized at the first location on Paris Mountain Avenue, and another shipment of ten pounds was seized at the second location on Hillcrest Drive.

Authorities said they believed that the drug traffickers were using overnight rental homes that were rented through Airbnb to deliver various shipments.

“Marijuana shipments from California to Greenville have exploded,” said Sheriff Hobart Lewis. “It is a disturbing trend due to the ease of obtaining marijuana and THC derivatives in California and shipping the drugs to Greenville.”

Commander McEntire said the owners of the rental homes were completely unaware that they were being used for this purpose.

The two arrested from the investigation were 26-year-old Kelby Joshua Darnell McKinney and 25-year-old Zna Lashae LeGrand.

The marijuana that was seized has a street value of roughly $90,000.
