A teenager from Simpsonville stood before the judge on Monday for sentencing after he pleaded guilty to stabbing his mother to death in September of 2015.

Just 13-years-old at the time of the murder, Miguel Cano, now aged 17, brutally stabbed his mother, 44-year-old Isabel Zuluaga, 28 times.

Cano in court on Monday pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter, and was sentenced to 23 years in the South Carolina Department of Corrections.

Consideration was made to the fact that Cano is autistic and that he was so young at the time of the crime, but his videotaped confession was also a major factor in the sentencing, which showed Cano admitting not only to his mother’s killing, but confessing he had been planning to kill many others.

Cano admitted in court while reading a written statement that his mother’s murder was a “horrible, evil thing.”

He made that statement in what was reportedly a calm, clear, and unemotional tone of voice.
