A Laurens County school district set to welcome students back to the classroom Tuesday is back to "learning-from-home"  instead.

Laurens County School District 55 was to have switched to  attendance plan "yellow" today, the transition schedule from e-learning to face-to-face classroom teaching.

But parents got a message at two o'clock Labor Day-Monday afternoon saying DHEC's update reporting the Laurens County infection rate had surged from "moderate" to "high"....and that the district is reverting to the "code red" schedule until further notice.

In the words of District Superintendent Ameca Thomas, "We have not yet turned the corner with this pandemic."

Doctor Thomas' statement adds: “...our greatest concern, of course, is for the health and safety of students, staff, and the broader community."
