Shock and grief are now being felt in Spartanburg after a teenager was killed in a motor accident.

The Spartanburg County coroner has confirmed that 18-year-old Spartanburg High School student Caleb Fant has died from injuries sustained in a car wreck on Monday night.

The crash, which involved three vehicles, occurred around 10:26 pm on Pine Street near Forest Avenue.

Spartanburg police say a Nissan SUV driven by Caleb’s brother had stalled on the road, and as Caleb and his brother got out to identify the problem, the car was hit from behind by a Nissan sedan. Caleb was thrown into the roadway and then hit by an oncoming Honda Accord.

His brother also sustained injuries.

Both were taken to the hospital, where Caleb was pronounced dead about a half hour later.

The principle of Spartanburg High School has released a statement saying the community is in grief over the tragedy, and described Caleb as a gentleman, a great encourager of his teammates on the basketball team, and someone whose warmth and constant smile will be greatly missed.

The accident is now under investigation.
