OCSO Arrests Newry Man on Multiple Charges

(Walhalla, SC) The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office arrested a Newry man on multiple charges over the weekend after a traffic stop.

31 year old Joshua Lee Byrd of South Avenue was charged with one count each of Trafficking in Methamphetamine, Unlawful Carrying of a Weapon, Possession of a Weapon by a Convicted Felon, Possession of a Weapon during Commission of a Violent Crime, Driving under Suspension, a Habitual Traffic Offender, Use of a License Plate Registered to Another Vehicle, Operating a Vehicle not Registered and Operating an Uninsured Vehicle.  Byrd also had a Magistrates Bench Warrant from Seneca Municipal Court.

A deputy from the Uniform Patrol Division on routine patrol late Saturday morning initiated a traffic stop on a black in color Cadillac Escalade near Salem and Pine Tree Drive due to a traffic violation.  Dispatchers informed the deputy that the Georgia tag on the vehicle came back registered to a Pontiac.

Dispatchers also confirmed that the driver, identified as Byrd, had a suspended license. As the investigation continued, the deputy located a fanny pack style bag that contained a quantity of narcotics as well as a handgun and ammunition. 

Byrd was placed under arrest and transported to the Oconee County Detention Center as deputies made arrangement to have the vehicle towed from the scene. 

At this time, Byrd remains in custody at the Oconee County Detention Center on a combined $42,797.50 surety bond on the Sheriff’s Office charges.
