The Greenville Police Departmart Public Affiars Manager, Donald Porter, issued the following press release Thursday morning.

One man is dead following a shooting in Nicholtown overnight.

Just before 11 p.m. last night, the GPD Communications Center (9-1-1 Dispatch) received a call of gunshots fired and an individual wounded at Forest View Apartments located at 515 Webster Road in Greenville.

GPD patrol officers quickly responded to the location to find a critically injured black male victim lying in the parking lot. Officers began applying lifesaving aid before EMT personnel arrived a short time later to take over. Despite their best efforts, the victim succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

GPD detectives, officers, and personnel from the Greenville County Forensics Division continue to process the location, interview witnesses, and follow-up on leads in order to identify the individual or individuals responsible for this homicide.

At this time, GPD investigators do not think this was a random act of violence. They have reason to believe the suspect and victim knew each other and the shooting was the escalation of a conflict between them.

The Greenville County Coroner’s Office is expected to release the name of the victim and the exact cause of death later today. This is the second homicide in the City of Greenville this year.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers of Greenville at 23-CRIME (864-232-7463).

The Greenville County Coroner's Office identified the victim as Jerel Antonio Mansel, 29 of Greenville.  The Coroner's Office reports that Mansel was pronounced dead at the scene.
