A Greenville Police Department officer is recovering following a violent assault Saturday night while assisting fellow officers in the arrest a subject downtown.

The incident occurred at the corner of North Main Street and East Coffee Street at approximately 9:15 p.m. Officers were effecting the arrest of 30-year-old Wallace Ingram McKinnon for an outstanding warrant for Assault and Battery from earlier in the day.

McKinnon, who is believed to be homeless, became highly agitated and insisted “Ain’t nobody going to take me in” before violently assaulting one of the officers, Nikki Morton, by striking her in the face with his fist, causing her to fall backwards into a metal bench and onto the concrete.

Other police officers on-scene quickly subdued and restrained McKinnon before transporting him to the Greenville County Detention Center. He remains held on a total bond amount of $15,000.

Officer Morton, a 10-year veteran of the Department, was transported by ambulance to an area medical center and was admitted for treatment of several injuries including a broken jaw.
