South Carolina's capital city is reversing course on a project to add bike lanes to a busy road after residents complained.

Columbia City Manager Teresa Wilson says negative feedback prompted officials to scrap plans for bike lanes on a 7-mile stretch of Farrow Road in the northern part of the city.

Several miles of bike lanes bad been painted already. The number of lanes and configuration of the road were being altered as part of a bike lane and resurfacing project. The newspaper reports it will take at least a week of construction to repave the road and remove bike lanes

Scott Nuelken leads a local cycling group. He fears the reversal sets a precedent that residents can overturn bike lane projects if they complain.
