An orangutan at the Greenville zoo escaped from its enclosure on Sunday.

Jeff Bullock with the Greenville Zoo said the male orangutan was able to break one of the wires that held the enclosure netting together and slipped through the hole. The orangutan then sat on top of the roof holding area.

The zoo was placed on lockdown and all visitors were moved inside of the gift shop and various other safe areas.

Crew members were able to use water hoses and fire extinguishers to get the orangutan to go back into the enclosure long enough for a crew member to secure the net.

Visitors were released from their safe areas within about 30 minutes.
