Greenville Police issued the following press release Thursday morning.

(GREENVILLE)- Due to the ongoing efforts of Duke Energy and Pike Electric to restore power to areas around Woodruff Road and I-85, GPD officers will continue directing traffic as needed today at the intersection of Carolina Point Parkway heading towards Woodruff Road to Market Point Drive. Additionally, South Carolina Highway Patrol is blocking the off ramp from I-85 North onto Woodruff Road.

This work is necessary following an accident just before 1 a.m. today. Reportedly, a construction crew working in the I-85 median at Woodruff Road may have accidentally struck overhead power lines, which pulled them down and into the path of a passenger SUV headed southbound on I-85.

The vehicle struck the downed power lines, which caused the power poles on both sides of I-85 to fall.  The interstate was closed in both directions but reopened before 3 a.m. this morning.

The SUV driver was transported to an area medical facility with minor injuries, according to South Carolina Highway Patrol.  GPD patrol officers will continue to work with Highway Patrol and the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office to control traffic- to include road closures- as needed until all necessary repairs are completed.
