The Greenville County Sheriff's Office issued the following press release Friday.

School Resource Officers with the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office have arrested 18 year-old, Chase Nathan Hayurst for Possession of a weapon on school property and Possession of a stolen pistol, after an investigation revealed a firearm was brought on the property of Southside High School earlier today.

The incident began at Berea High School when administrators discovered an odor of marijuana coming from a vehicle. The School Resource Officer was notified and during the course of that investigation a search was conducted revealing a firearm in the glove compartment of a student’s car; however no drugs were located during the search.

An investigation ensued and deputies learned the firearm actually belonged to Hayurst, a student at Southside High School, who had been dropped off by the unidentified Berea High School student, who was unaware of the firearms presence in the car.

Although the firearm was never brought out of the glove compartment, Hayurst was arrested for the above offneses and transported to the Greenville County Detention Center where he was booked on a $7500 bond.

While there were no threats associated with the gun on school grounds, we are extremely thankful for the proactive and swift actions taken by administrations of both Berea and Southside High Schools.
