His creations have become so ubiquitous that it can seem almost strange to remember a time before the imagination of Stan Lee dominated American pop culture.

Spiderman, Thor, Iron Man, Black Panther, X-men, Daredevil – these are just a few of the characters dreamt up by Lee since he got started in the comic business back in 1939.

The longtime writer, editor and publisher of Marvel Comics first gained famed with artist collaborators like Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, propelling Marvel Comics from a small project between friends to the world’s Number 1 publisher of comic books.

Today it’s a multimedia powerhouse that has brought in an estimated $28 billion. Most recently, Marvel’s Avengers Infinity War brought in more than $2 billion in the box office.

Lee said he used to think what he did wasn’t very important. But as the years went by, he saw how his “crazy stories about people in costumes” could matter quite a bit more than he initially thought.

 Stan Lee was 95.
