The Legislature is adjourned for the year, but South Carolina senators are continuing their work on a massive bill to overhaul the state's education system.

A group of them met Monday to discuss what can be done to hold failing school districts accountable and put them under state control if necessary.

The South Carolina Education Department is already helping run school districts in Williamsburg, Florence and Allendale counties.

Education Superintendent Molly Spearman says the state takeover has helped those schools. But she says lawmakers need to help establish a procedure to put the schools back in local control.

Sen. Greg Hembree says he wants the bill passed by the Senate Education Committee so it can be debated on the Senate floor as soon as lawmakers return in January.
