Norfolk Southern is conducting special operations training this week for first responders in several Upstate counties. Hazardous materials training for incidents involving rail cars will take place November 6 through November 9. This training will have a hands-on portion on Monday where technician level responders will assess and correct leaks from tank cars.

Training on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday will consist of a lecture on rail car emergencies for operations and awareness level responders. On Friday, rescue specialists will learn about performing rescues on Amtrak passenger cars and locomotives.

Throughout the week, 250 responders from Greenville, Anderson, Pickens, and Oconee counties will be participating in the various training programs.

I spoke with Jay Marett, the Deputy Director of Emergency Management for Greenville County, about the hands on drills Monday.
