A teacher at St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Greenville has resigned after questions were raised over his association with a priest accused of sexually abusing a student.

That priest, Hayden Vaverek, was defrocked after the abuse was made public.

A letter sent to parents and staff of St. Joseph’s, which was not released publicly, was signed by the school’s headmaster Keith Kiser.

In the letter, Kiser explains why he accepted the resignation of teacher Neil O’Connor, who had nearly 26 years of teaching.

Kiser said that O’Connor was not involved in any way in the sexual abuse perpetuated for Vaverek, but said the teacher’s continued association with the former priest had raised concerns amongst parents and those in the community.

Vaverek allegedly abused a student back in 1997, allegations that were made public in 2013.
