Surge in Absences

Mass Sickness to Blame

A massive surge of student absences has one school worried. Here’s Evan Smith with the story:

The day after the Super Bowl is unofficially known across the country as America’s National Sick Day.

Strangely, by some odd coincidence, an estimated 17 million people are unable to work the day after the Super Bowl.  Aka: they hit the booze and the cheese dip a little too hard.

But school administrators assure the public, that’s not the case at Augusta Circle Elementary School, which on Monday saw a record 84 students and ten teachers absent, largely because of illness.

Now school district spokeswoman Beth Brotherton said custodians are working overtime to clean the school, which hosts more than 500 students.

The cause for the mass absences is ostensibly the flu. The state Department of Health and Environmental Control was notified yesterday about the problem.
