The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office arrested a teenager from the Atlanta Metro area Tuesday evening on a charge of Trafficking in Methamphetamine.

18 year old Zelenia Isabel Torres of Cotton Gin Lane in Lawrenceville, GA was booked into the Oconee County Detention Center around 9:31pm on a Temporary Custody Order until warrants was obtained yesterday.

Torres has also been charged with Possession with Intent to Distribute Marijuana and Unlawful Carry of a Weapon.

A deputy from the P.A.C.E. Team (Pro-Active Community Enforcement) on routine patrol conducted a traffic stop Tuesday evening on a Silver BMW, which made an unlawful lane change, on I-85 northbound near the 4 mile marker, which is near Highway 243.

After asking the driver, Torres, to step out of the vehicle, the deputy obtained consent from Torres to search the vehicle.  Afterwards, Torres questioned why the deputy was going to search the vehicle and that the deputy did not have probable cause.

A K-9 officer deployed his dog, upon which Torres took off running down the side of the road.  However, Torres was taken into custody by the deputies.

The K-9 detected the presence of narcotics in the vehicle.  The search of the vehicle produced approximately 144 grams of a crystal like substance believed to be Methamphetamine and a quantity of a substance believe to be Marijuana in Torres’ purse.

A handgun was also discovered in Torres’ purse.  Torres did not have a permit to carry the weapon, according to deputies.

Torres was placed under arrest and transported to the Detention Center.  Torres remains in custody as of 10:45am this morning on a combined $85,000 surety bond.

The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office is continuing their investigation.

The street value of the Methamphetamine seized in the stop is around $14,400.  Combined with the street value of Methamphetamine seized in a traffic stop in the Fair Play area on August 8th, the Sheriff’s Office has taken $256,400 in Methamphetamine of the streets in Oconee County this month.
