Starting January 1st, people in South Carolina will pay 16-dollars more to register their vehicles.

The increase in registration fees is part of the Roads Bill and gas tax passed in 2017, says Lauren Phillips with the Department of Motor Vehicles.

"For most normal passenger vehicles, which you used to pay $24.00 to register, you will now pay $40.00".

People who own hybrid or electric vehicles will have to pay a 60-dollar road use fee every two years.

Phillips said the rate increases are part of the roads bill passed by legislators.

"This agency does never like to see a fee increase. This is a legislative mandate that we are charged with carrying out."

The increased rate will show up on your property tax notice.
