Radio & Baseball guy

April 24, 2019 - 10:59 am

Sad news to report this morning.  Former 106.3 WORD newsman and voice of the Greenville Drive, Ed Jenson passed away last night.

Ed Jenson
Ed worked in radio for 40+ years, starting out in his hometown of Storm Lake, Iowa back in 1968.  His radio career took him to Florida, Georgia and eventually, South Carolina.  While in Georgia, Ed owned an AM and FM radio station.

Ed worked for Entercom and WORD for over 16 years and for a time, was the news director here.

As much as Ed loved radio and was a true professional in this business, Ed's real first love was baseball, specifically, the Greenville Drive.  He was the play-by-play voice for the Drive since they first began in 2005, hardly ever missing a game whether that be a home game or away game.  The Greenville Drive is planning to rename their press box at Fluor Field in honor of Ed while team members this year will wear a patch on their jerseys featuring the initials "EJ" above the image of an old style microphone.

Ed did play-by-play baseball, basketball, football, softball and even college and high school wrestling over his career.

In an interview with Crawdad’s Beat back in 2015, the website that covers the Hickory Crawdads, Ed was asked how he would like to be remembered.  Ed is quoted as saying, “I can’t even think of anything for people to remember me. Just, don’t remember me, just live your life. Have fun with it because sometimes it’s short. That’s the thing: have fun. Treat people nice. Treat people the way you want to be treated. If you don’t, change your ways.”

Ed is survived by his wife here in Greenville and three children who live in Iowa.  He also had several grandchildren.

A memorial services will be held 4pm, Saturday, April 27, at The Wood Mortuary, 300 West Poinsett Street. Greer, SC, 29650
Visitation will be held 2:30-3:45pm Saturday prior to the service at the mortuary.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting memorials to be made to Interim Hospice, 16 Hyland Road, Greenville, SC 29615.

See what the Greenville Drive had to say about Ed.
